about Michael Fotion, ACSW
Associate Social Worker
Hello! My name is Mike Fotion. My values as a social worker (and life) are based in a strong sense of duty to help others, recognizing individual strengths and inherent worth, and having a positive impact on those whom I come into contact with. Outside of my professional life, I am as active as possible - I love a good hike, workout, or beach day. I also have a deep love for film and music, and try to never pass up an opportunity to go to a show.
I have worked in the mental health field for the past 6 years - on top of being a therapist, I’m a Director of Services for non-profits that help people experiencing homelessness. Through this work I’ve developed a treatment approach that includes Motivational Interviewing, Person-Centered Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy techniques.
When working with me, clients can expect a collaborative, non-judgmental, safe space to explore their emotions and various presenting issues. I believe that people are doing the best they can with what they have at any given moment. To me, mental and emotional difficulties are a universal part of being human. These difficulties are best conceptualized as responses to various external and internal factors, and therapy helps us explore our lives and our responses to achieve a greater peace and understanding.
There's a Leonard Cohen song that has the line "There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in". And I like that.
